ABOUT ME
ABOUT ME
Welcome to my website, my name is Dr Edward Mundy and I am an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years of experience working in the NHS and academia. I have a small private practice in Canterbury seeing adults for face to face psychological assessment and therapy as well as online.

I understand people can seek therapy for a range of reasons: you may be looking for relief from distressing experiences, having difficulties in your personal life, you may feel unhappy or discontented in some way but not quite why sure, you may want to understand yourself better, or it might be for another reason. Whatever your motivation, I am happy to work with you on what you want to achieve from therapy using my expertise and a range of psychological approaches.

I work with a range of presenting problems, including PTSD, OCD, low mood and depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, psychosis and complex trauma. I am also experienced in supporting people to improve relationships, overcome trauma, navigate transitions, process loss and bereavement, and explore and develop their sense of identity.

Whilst my private practice is open to all, I have expertise in working with LGBTQ+ people. Gay men's psychological health is a particular area of interest of mine, having published on sexualised drug use (commonly known as chemsex) and I am currently supervising doctoral research on compulsive sexual behaviour amongst gay men.

MY APPROACH TO THERAPY
My approach to therapy is predominantly integrative, drawing on a range of psychological therapies depending on your needs and your goal(s) for therapy. How we work depends on the combination of what you feel you want help with, what the evidence-base suggests may be most helpful, the approach you want to take, and my areas of skills/expertise. I value working collaboratively and openly, so I welcome feedback on how the work is progressing to ensure I can maximise the therapy for you.

In addition to my core clinical training I have advanced training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I offer CBT for PTSD and Complex PTSD, and I draw on Schema therapy. My approach to therapy is also informed by psychodynamic therapy. Psychodynamic therapy is a broad church and can be practiced in vastly different ways. As a Clinical Psychologist, I draw on evidenced-based approaches, specifically Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT), and Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT).
In the room, I am engaged, authentic, boundaried and collaborative, but I will seek to challenge you. Ultimately, therapy is about change which is achieved by being supported to face our emotional difficulties in a safe and tolerable way.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Clinical Psychologists are trained to a doctoral level in several evidence-based psychological therapies and to work with people across the lifespan presenting with a range of psychological and psychiatric difficulties.

EXPERIENCE
This vast majority of my clinical and research experience is in adult mental health, working predominantly with adults experiencing complex mental health problems. I have worked in specialist psychological therapies services in community mental health teams, acute services (crisis teams and inpatient), and in early-intervention in psychosis services. I currently work in the NHS as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in a secondary care specialist community mental health team, working with adults experiencing a range of complex mental health problems. In addition to my NHS work, I am a Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at the University of Kent, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and I supervise masters and doctoral research.

I have significant experience of working with adults who have experienced trauma as children and/or adults. Trauma often sits at the heart of people's difficulties, yet it can express itself in different ways (including through a variety of psychiatric diagnoses) and therefore careful consideration of impacts on people is needed as well as what approach is then needed to address it.
